Our Brains need workouts too – On Synapses, Travel & the Unexpected

The other day I was talking to my sister, who’s also back here in Provence after a few years away, and I wanted to tell her the name of one of my favourite villages here – but suddenly I couldn’t recall it’s name.

Do you ever have that happen? Where you suddenly blank out about the name of a person or place.

Yes I did eventually remember it’s name a few minutes later, but it was a bit of a shock when it happened. (If you’re curious, the village I wanted to tell her about is called Faucon, meaning Falcon, and it has views and two wonderful local restaurants.)

Lapses of our memory and mental clarity can happens at times, and often get worse with the years passing – but you can can help the health of your brain by including things that give it a workout. A surprising one of these is what I’m exploring in this video for you today.

To keep good memory and a clear-thinking mind, our brains needs good electrical flow and connection between the neurons (nerve cells), and these connections happen at the synapses, junctions, where they join each other. The synapses are what is triggered when we try and remember something, and the more we access certain memories, the more these are fired up, and stronger they become. So strengthening the synapses helps our brain health and memory. And as I had not been back to Provence for 3 years my memory of Faucon’s name had not accessed for a while, so my brain reduced access to it.

Recent research also found that the stress of the last few years has affected many people’s memories. For our brains are badly affected by stress, neurotoxins and lack of stimulation.

So, how have your memory and mind clarity have been lately – Like to boost your brain?

Today I’m sharing about the key brain workout that I’m practicing while I’m travelling. It may seem a bit surprising, but I think you’ll enjoy it. It is to do with Unexpected Things and Adapting, which will make sense once you watch the video. Then you might actively look for situations like these in your life, and so benefit from even uncomfortable ones.
